Your EPFO passbook shows "Claim Already Settled — ₹0." You never withdrew your pension. If you moved jobs into or out of a company with its own PF Trust, this is one of the most common — and most misunderstood — statuses in the entire EPS system. It rarely means your pension is gone. It usually means your records, not your money, need a second look.

Quick Answer
A PF Trust does not manage your pension. Under Section 17 of the EPF & Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, a company can run its own exempted Provident Fund Trust — but the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995 (EPS) is excluded from that exemption. EPS is created under Section 6A of the same Act, and Paragraph 1(a) of the EPS explicitly extends the scheme to employees of exempted (Trust) establishments. In practice: the Trust runs your EPF. EPFO always runs your EPS — Trust or no Trust.
This is why a clean PF transfer and a broken pension record can coexist. EPF moves as a balance. EPS continues as service history — and service history is what breaks when employment dates, Member IDs, or Trust-to-EPFO reconciliation are incomplete.
Not sure whether your EPS records are actually correct? A completed PF transfer doesn't always mean your pension records are complete. If you've changed jobs, worked with an exempted PF Trust, or are seeing issues like missing service history or "Claim Already Settled – ₹0," schedule a consultation with Kustodian. Our experts will review your UAN, Member IDs, service history, and EPS continuity to identify the root cause before it affects your pension claim.
Why This Happens: Two Systems, One UAN
| EPF | EPS (Pension) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who administers it | Employer's PF Trust (if exempted) | EPFO, always |
| What moves on job change | Your account balance | Nothing moves — your service years accumulate |
| What you see | A visible, transferable balance | No visible balance — tracked by service duration under your UAN |
| What breaks it | A failed or delayed transfer | Incorrect Member IDs, DOJ/DOE errors, or missed Trust–EPFO reconciliation |
This is the single fact behind nearly every symptom below. Everything else in this guide is diagnosis, not repetition of this point.
"Claim Already Settled — ₹0": What It Actually Means
This status does not mean EPFO lost your pension. EPS has no separate withdrawable balance the way EPF does — so "settled" usually refers to a prior EPS action already recorded against that Member ID (commonly a withdrawal benefit or Scheme Certificate issued at an earlier job change), not a write-off of your current entitlement.
Before assuming anything is lost: pull your full Member ID history under your UAN and check whether a withdrawal benefit or Scheme Certificate was issued for an earlier, shorter stint of employment. That's the claim being referenced — not your current service.
Before assuming your pension is lost, make sure you're looking at the complete picture. Kustodian's Free EPF Audit reviews your UAN, Member IDs, service history, previous transfers, Scheme Certificate records, and EPS continuity to identify what the portal status is actually referring to. If a historical record or linking issue is causing the "Claim Already Settled – ₹0" message, you'll know exactly where the problem lies before filing a grievance or another claim.
What Determines Your Pension: Service, Not Balance
Under EPS, pension eligibility depends on cumulative pensionable service, not an account balance:
- Under 6 months' service: No withdrawal benefit is payable; a Scheme Certificate can still be issued to preserve the service on record.
- 6 months to under 10 years: You can either take a withdrawal benefit (Form 10C) or opt for a Scheme Certificate to carry the service forward.
- 10 years or more: Withdrawal is no longer permitted — the law requires a Scheme Certificate, and this service counts toward your eventual monthly pension.
A 2024 amendment to EPS Table D also extended proportionate withdrawal benefits to members with more than 6 months but less than a full year of contributory service — previously, partial years under 6 months were dropped entirely from the calculation. If you left a Trust-covered job with a short, odd-length tenure, this change may directly affect what you're owed.
The Scheme Certificate, in a Trust Transfer
A Scheme Certificate is what preserves your pensionable service when you leave a job without immediately joining another EPS-covered employer, or when you've crossed 10 years and can no longer withdraw. In a Trust-to-Trust or Trust-to-EPFO move, it matters most when:
- You left before completing 10 years and didn't take a withdrawal benefit
- You had a gap in employment before your next EPS-covered job
- Your previous Trust employer didn't confirm your Date of Exit with EPFO
Without it, service earned at a short-tenure job can effectively fall out of your pensionable history.
The Four Records That Determine Pension Continuity
Every Trust-related pension issue traces back to one of four records:
| Record | Breaks when... | Symptom |
|---|---|---|
| Service history | Trust doesn't confirm exit dates with EPFO | Previous employer missing |
| Member IDs | A Member ID isn't linked to your UAN | Multiple Member IDs, orphaned service |
| Employment dates (DOJ/DOE) | Employer records mismatch EPFO records | Reduced pensionable years |
| EPS continuity | Any of the above goes uncorrected | "Settled — ₹0," missing pension, blocked claims |
Before your PF transfer, verify all four — a completed EPF transfer confirms none of them.
Trust Employee Checklist
- Previous Trust employment visible under your UAN
- All Member IDs linked to one UAN — no orphaned IDs
- Date of Joining and Date of Exit correct at every employer
- No unexplained gap in service history
- Scheme Certificate obtained if you left before 10 years without withdrawing
- No duplicate UAN
Do this before you need the pension, not after. A missing record from a job you left eight years ago is far harder to reconstruct at 58 than at 35.
FAQs
Does my PF Trust manage my pension? No. It manages your EPF. EPFO administers EPS regardless of whether your employer runs an exempted Trust.
Why did my EPF transfer but not my EPS? EPS doesn't "transfer" as a balance — it continues as service under your UAN. If it looks absent, the likely cause is a Member ID or Trust-reconciliation gap, not a lost transfer.
Can I withdraw my EPS after 10 years of service? No — the law bars lump-sum EPS withdrawal at 10+ years of service. A Scheme Certificate is required instead, and that service counts toward your monthly pension.
Does withdrawing my EPF end my pension? No. EPF withdrawal and EPS entitlement are governed separately; withdrawing your EPF balance doesn't by itself affect recorded EPS service.
Still Unsure About Your EPS or PF Trust Records?
A missing pension record, an old Member ID, or a "Claim Already Settled – ₹0" status doesn't always mean you've lost your pension. The real issue is often hidden in your service history, Member ID mapping, or Trust-to-EPFO records.
Book a free consultation with Kustodian's EPF experts. We'll review your UAN, service history, PF Trust records, EPS continuity, and previous transfers to help identify the actual cause before you file a claim or raise a grievance.
Check Before It's a Retirement-Day Problem
A completed PF transfer confirms your balance moved. It doesn't confirm your pension did. Kustodian's free audit checks your service history, Member IDs, employment dates, and EPS continuity across every employer under your UAN — Trust and non-Trust alike — so a record gap surfaces now, not at your pension claim.
